Prysmian calls on contractors to drum up recycling

Over half of cable drums supplied by Prysmian Cables and Systems are sent to landfill by electrical contractors every year when they could be recycled for free using Prysmian’s nationwide drum collection service.

The biggest cable manufacturer in the world supplies around 14,000 cable drums a year to the electrical contracting industry, of which a staggering 8,000 drums are never returned.

As a result of replacing the drums 1,600 trees are lost and 480 tonnes of CO2 is released into the atmosphere, in addition to another 320 tonnes from the burning or disposal at landfill each year.

Phil Simon, UK logistics manager at Prysmian Cables and Systems said: “Wooden cable drums can be re-used approximately five times, which helps us to reduce the amount of new packaging we produce. The pick up service already exists, but not enough contractors are taking advantage of it.

“Rather than contributing to environmental problems the electrical contracting industry should be part of the solution, which is why we make it free and as easy as possible for our customers to make a positive impact on the environment that is just a simple phone call away.”

If you have Prysmian cable drums which are empty and available for pick up then call their drum collection service FREE on 0800 413 227
