Company History

Prysmian has over 130 years experience in the manufacture of cables, and over 30 years of that is in the manufacture of fire resistant cables. Formerly known as Pirelli Cables, Prysmian is a truly global company with an expansive history. Below is a brief summary of what has happened over the years!

2012
a brand of PGPrysmian Group was formed to combine businesses throughout the world. 97 plants in 50 countries with about 22,000 employees, a truly global company.
2007
2007Prysmian becomes a listed company. Prysmian S.p.A. shares began trading on Thursday, 3 May 2007 on the Milan Stock Exchange, in the Blue Chip segment.
2005
Pysmian logoGoldman Sachs Capital Partners bought all cables activities from Pirelli. The new company took the name of Prysmian Cables & Systems Ltd.
2000-2005
Consolidation of the organisational structure after the various acquisitions.
2000
Acquisition of NKF Holland, Nokia Finland BICC General (11 factories). Creation of Pirelli Labs in Milan, the group’s research centre developing new technologies in the field of photonics, fibre optics and material science.
1998-1999
Acquisition of Siemens Energy Cables (15 factories) and Metal Manufacturers Ltd (construction and power cables).
1995
prysmian insudite logoLaunch of the first FP cable incorporating unique InsuditeTM insulation.
1990's
Joint venture for the production of cables is established in Indonesia: First affiliate in Asia. Joint Venture in China for the production of telecommunication cables.
1980's
New plant for Submarine cables in Southampton. Acquisition of the Filergie Group in France to strengthen production. First Italian fibre optics production facility at Battipaglia, OVC technology.
1976
Prysmian FPLaunch of the first FP cable in the UK!
1970's
Two new plants in Southern Italy: Cavi Telefonici Meridionali and Società Meridionale Accessori Elastomerici. Pirelli Cables Australia established in Sidney and first plant build in Minto. Three new cable factories built in Brazil, in Sao Paul State. Pirelli Cable Corporation established in the US through acquisition of General Cable Corporation. Large cable production complex of prime technological importance acquired in France (Trefimetaux Group).
1960's
Industrial investments in Southern Italy with a plant for plastic cables in Giovinazzo (Bari). A new plant in Eastleigh (UK) doubles production capacity of very high voltage cables.
1950's
Cable production starts in Canada with the acquisition of a plant in St. Jean (Quebec). The entire production for submarine cables concentrated in the new plant in Arco Felice, near Naples, Italy. Pirelli France S.A is established and brings together all activities of the group in France.
1930's
Industrial facilities established in France.
1920's
Industrial expansion in South America with a new affiliate in Brazil. Production capacity doubled in the UK with a new unit in Eastleigh.
1910's
Sales companies established in London and Paris, sales offices established in Vienna, Brussels and Buenos Aires. Cable factory built in Southampton. First affiliate outside Europe (Argentina).
1902
First plant abroad is built in Spain (close to Barcelona).
1886
1886Production of undersea telegraph cables begins in Milan.
1879
Production of insulated wiring and cables for
electrical application begins.
1872
Company founded on January 28th.
