Understand the Standard

Fire alarms, emergency lighting and life safety systems each needs to be considered when designing or installing electrical systems for buildings to meet the requirements of building regulations, it’s the law.

Building regulations indicate what systems are needed for the building and codes of practice help engineers and installers design, install and commission them. The code of practice for each system are BS5839, BS5266 and BS8519 which have been written and published following years of conferring with clients, regulators, installers and the public.

They represent the collected industry ‘best practice’ and identify the key issues that need to be evaluated for the building, for renovation or new build.

One thing these British Standards all have in common is to refer to fi re resistant cables and that’s where Prysmian come in; we’ve been designing, manufacturing and testing them for over thirty-fi ve years here in the UK.

Prysmian have developed FP cables over the years to meet the demands of engineers and installers to solve real issues on real buildings. We develop cables and accessories that become part of the new British Standards and our expert Terry Journeaux has written a series of FP Guides for us. The guides are designed to help Engineers, Installers and Clients understand the implications of these British Standards and now each of the Guides are available for free on our website www.fpcables.co.uk.
